Chapter 12
THE TWINKLY LIGHTS lit up the oak tree and a path from the parking lot to the reception. It was a brisk night, but they had bonfires set up out under the full moon. Kerry stood at the top of the porch looking out across the large group of cowboys and cowgirls who would come out from their properties across the tri-valley region. They were here to celebrate the wedding of Robb and Kerry. She could just see out the window and her heart fluttered. Maybe what they were doing was wrong. Maybe they shouldnât have lied to all these people. She heard footsteps behind her and turned around to glance over her shoulder.
âHi,â she said to Robb he was standing in the doorway staring at her his eyes dark and smoldering. He wore a thick turtleneck sweater, a cowboy hat, and a smile.
âI donât think you realize how beautiful you are,â Robb said his voice catching in his throat.
âI was standing here feeling guilty,â she said softly.
âDonât. These people come here to celebrate a wedding,â Robb spoke quietly. âWe had a wedding. It may have been small and short, but it was ordained by my father. You donât get much more married than that.â
âYeah, but itâs not true,â she replied.
âWell tonight weâre going to pretend it is.â Robbâs eyes grew dark. âPeople love a happy ending. Tonight, weâre going to give them one. Itâs the perfect love story, and now Dadâs sitting up and the ramps are built, we can bring him out. His hand rested on her hip. She started. He hadnât touched her in such a familiar way, but this must be what he meant by selling it.
âIâll get your dad.â Kerry nodded, stepping back into the living room.
Justin already put her father in the wheelchair, and he was smiling. Heâd been having a few meals at the kitchen table with her lately, but he still wasnât able to walk more, he was working on sit ups. She would have to try to work more on the walking. She was here to rehabilitate him, not to make gooey eyes at the tall dark drink of water wearing a cowboy hat.
The crowd let out a collective cheer as Kerry and Robb, pushing his dad, stepped out of the house and onto the veranda. They stood there in the twinkly lights and Kerry felt like she was the queen of Potter Valley with everybody hollering and cheering the âbride and groomâ and the recovering pastor. She hung back a bit as Robb brought his dad down the newly installed ramp and the people surged forward to congratulate Robb on his wedding and Pastor Don on his growing health. It was clear this group of people were a community who loved each other. They had history spanning generations.
Kerry couldnât fathom what that must be like, to know exactly where you are from and exactly where you belong. She had never felt that way in her life. She had always been uncomfortable and unwanted at home, and then felt like a nomad once her grandfather died.
